Banda area residents standing together for an electricity petition

Light Up Banda Area Now

Why should a Community Live in Darkness in this day and age?

Banda Primary School has had electricity for years. Yet the homes around Banda area, including Wasweta, Kaminasuo, Odundu, Oyengu and Oturbam, have never been connected. It is as if the power simply stopped at the school gate. Families remain without electricity. Businesses still close when darkness falls. We have waited long enough. It is time for that light to reach the people. It is time for this to change.

The injustice

This is not a blackout. It is a failure to extend an existing grid.

Banda area residents are asking for a basic public service that is already visibly nearby. The school connection proves the infrastructure reached the community boundary. The extension to households has never been completed.

The facts

  • Banda Primary School, located in South Kamagambo Ward, Rongo Constituency, was connected to the national electricity grid years ago.
  • The surrounding communities - Banda Village, Konditi Area, Kaminasuo Village and Odundu Village - have never had that connection extended to them.
  • Households, businesses, health facilities and public spaces remain completely without power.
  • Repeated requests and promises from government officials have yielded zero action.

The impact

Students cannot study after dark - disadvantaged in national exams.

Businesses cannot operate at night - economic stagnation.

Healthcare facilities are compromised - no refrigeration, no lighting for emergencies.

Water pumping is impossible - communities rely on manual water fetching.

Crime and insecurity have risen - darkness enables criminals.

The school 200 metres away has power. Our children walk home to darkness.

The burning question

The line exists. The school is connected. Why has the community been left out?

Banda Primary School is lit at the center while surrounding villages remain in darkness. The demand is simple: extend what already exists.

The extension has never been done. Why?
